Basement moisture and drywall: the order of operations
Water first, drywall second. That is the rule for basements. Fix the water, then build the walls. Skip the first step and mold will grow behind the new walls.
The water checklist
Grading. Soil slopes away from the foundation. The cheapest fix there is.
Gutters. Downspouts move water far from the house. Clogged gutters dump it at the foundation.
Sump pump. Many local basements have one. It must work before drywall goes up.
History. Be honest about past water. We will be honest back.
When drywall is safe
When the basement stays dry through heavy rain. Then we hang damp-rated board. We gap it at the slab. We detail it right. A dehumidifier keeps the finished space healthy.
When it waits
Water every storm means waterproofing first. French drains, sump work, exterior fixes. That is another trade's job. We will tell you straight and wait.
